Thanks for allowing me to share it with you. I appreciate you taking the time to browse through. It was a difficult time for me personally and I hope that it can help inspire someone to achieve a greater height.

No matter what happens, I can always look to that time in my life for strength when things get tough or go wrong.

I can tell you first hand that not getting enough sleep is a problem. Three months ago I changed shifts at work. I start work at 3:30a.m. and get off at 2:00 p.m., working 4 10 hour days, if I don't work overtime until 4:00 p.m. I get about 4 to 5 hours sleep a night. It is really hard to go to sleep at 7:30 p.m. that would give me 8 hours. I have noticed that I have been wanting to eat more and have gain some weight. I am tired all the time and I know that I need more sleep. There has been no time to exercise and I am too tired when I get home. I try to eat healthy but when you are tired you will power goes out the window. My daughter told me about you show and I am trying to catch up from the beginning. I enjoy listening. Keep up the good work. You have at least one listener is Colorado. I will try and spread the word.

This is unrelated to this specific show, but I thought you both, and listeners, might be interested in these PBS shows. If you go to this link: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/takeonestep/

you can watch the full episodes online. The two interesting ones are "FAT: What no one is telling you" and "Heart Disease: The Hidden Epidemic" They're both really informative and have a lot of useful information. I'm not so sure how I feel about the "Fat" episode, but I thought you guys would find these episodes very intersting as they both discuss current research and public health issues.

Hi,

I just caught your show on cycling. I'm an avid pedal-bike commuter. I would rather ride in the pouring rain and sleet than take the bus. Cycling is a brilliant start to my day, an opportunity to appreciate the world around me...plus, it saves me money!

I get pretty sweaty on my way into work, and I've taken to freshening up with a towel bath. My current job has a shower but I don't trust its cleanliness; besides, I've got the towel thing down pat. My last job was in a showerless office, and I'd ride in and sometimes also go out for a lunchtime run. I would wash my body with a small, soapy hand towel; my face with my girlie face wash; and use my deodorant. I never got any complaints, and was told on occasion that I smelled nice. Mostly, I received compliments on my glowing complexion.

I hope this helps. It's a late comment.

Cheers, and keep up the good work with the podcast! I fall in and out of exercising and I find this to be a great resource.

@Jennifer: Thanks for commenting. I just read an article on saving gas as well. Parking in the first spot you find versus driving around the parking lot trying to find the closest space will save you money as well as burn a couple more calories.

@Emily: 2 1/2 mile walk? That's why we called it a stealth calorie burner. That's awesome. I always have to remember to enjoy the hunt and the journey, because sometimes I come away without finding the cache.

Thanks for the comment.

@Susan: Believe me when I say I think I'm losing weight way too slow as well. But how many times have you heard about someone losing weight fast and then gaining it back within an equally short time? I think that speaks volumes about the ultra low calorie diets that most people put themselves on.

Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the comment.

Hi guys! I've just started listening to your program and am really enjoying it. I like the conversational format and the down-to-earth advice and information you give. It's also refreshing to hear Russ struggle at times with his weight loss goal (that sounds kind of weird to say...). But a lot of the messages we see/hear in magazines,on TV, radio and internet ads are "This (expensive) excersize equipment helped me lose 50 pounds in just 10 minutes only 3 times per week." Or "By taking this pill I wasn't hungry at all, the weight just melted off." And of course the before and after photos that make it seem like weight loss is instantaneous and easy. Hearing Russ have to fight for every ounce sometimes... well... it's just so much closer to my reality. Russ you're my hero!

Keep up the great work guys!

Hey, guys... I just want to say great job as always! I have been listening to you all since the beginning and each time you guys only get better. Keep up the good job! Oh, and I have to admit at first, I was thinking Russ was losing weight way to slow... but I now am a firm believer that losing weight slowly as you change your life style is what matters the most. Thanks!

The role that parents play in childhood obesity is a serious one - they seem to have a large impact on the epidemic, for better or for worse.
I am surprised the guy that lost the weight by eating McDonalds lived to tell us about it. That was nothing more than extreme starvation. There is no way he can maintain that lifestyle. I'm amazed he didn't suffer from malnutrition. If I ate that little I'd be dead in a week.

As always - Great show!

Awesome is all I can say. My husband did not believe that geocaching was real until we had our first find. Now I think he is more hoooked than I am. We when in search of a cache this last weekend and ended up on a two and a half mile walk. I would never have agreed to a walk that long thinking I could not do it. But I did it and with little problem. And we found the cache :)

Thanks so much for the great idea!!!

I'll agree with you on the breast fed babies exclusion. A friend of ours had one of the fattest little boy you ever saw. The baby was like 30 pounds at 3 months, 8-ish pounds when born. His rolls had rolls. His height caught up with his weight eventually. Just like your son, completely breast fed.

I should have clarified "juice". Kool-Aid is what I meant. Juice with no redeeming nutritional value.

Though I do not deny that children are becoming more and more overweight, I feel the need to comment on young children being classified "obese".
My youngest son was classified as "obese" when he was 10 months old and we were referred to specialists at the local children's hospital to make sure that it was not hormonal. It turns out however, that he is perfectly normal even though he was and is twice the weight of other kids his age.
He is the kicker though, at that time, he was still exclusively breastfed. He had not started Solids at all, he had not even had water. Now he is 18 months old and his weight gain has stopped but he is still nearly twice the size of other kids his age and he eats very small amounts and still mostly breastfed. My other children are quite skinny and were eating much more than he does at the same age and were nursing too so it is really his body and not what goes in that is determining his weight.
The specialists also told me that BMI should not be done for children under the age of 5 because children's weight and height can vary so much. So the rates of "obese" 2 year olds really do not count in my opinion.

That being said, I do think that parents are feeding their children the wrong things and that there are many children out there that are unhealthy despite their weight. "Juices" and Foods that are full of sugar, sodium, food additives such as dyes and artificial flavours... foods that are overly processed and no longer taste like real food. These children are not learning how to eat at all. Parents are setting their kids up for failure, whether it be obesity later in life or just unhealthy overall.

Yep, it looks like getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep is optimal. More than 8 is almost as bad as 5 or 6, but I think you're right on there being more factors than just sleep. All the participants still gained weight during the study.

What seems odd about this graph to me is that it isn't just a matter of more sleep equating to a lesser weight - notice how people who slept nine hours weighed MORE than those who sleep seven or eight.

It may point to a there being a particular optimum amount of sleep, with more or less being not as healthy - OR it could be that sleep habits are a reflection of other lifestyle choices. Either way, the data doesn't exactly support the neat-and-tidy conclusions of the article (at least the was it was presented here).

I can't remember where I heard this but it was on a similar view. We have gotten used to our electronics and don't do us much manual things as we used to so we are not burning as much energy. The example I remembered is the electric mixer; women used to have a lot of arm muscels because they mixed everything by hand. Since learning of this I do more manual things not only in the kitchen but around the house as well. I was also a member of weight watchers for a little while and they counted house work as exercise because at least you are not in front of the tv and you are moving. Another thing that I do is when I am straining up the house and something needs to go upstairs or downstairs instead of making a pile I will take that one item and the next time I find somehting I will take it right away. That way I am going up and down the stairs more and getting a little more movement out of my day. I have heard of the 10,000 step program just recently. I put my podomitore on and realized how little I move around in the day because at work I use a computer and don't have to get up as much, but will work on it.

Drs Ed Fox and Don Mathews of the Ohio State University developed this technique during the middle 1970's as a result of funding from the US Air Force. Coach Woody Hayes switched to this technique after talks with both the researchers.
I was in my middle 40's, at the time, and could only do 25 push ups in 1 minute. After switching to the new technique within 1 month i could do 100 push ups in one minute. i broke the exercise into 15 second intervals and then rested for 1 minute, but only excercised a total of 60 seconds. how about that. i am now 78 yrs old and still following interval technique. this is, in my opinion, the best way to exercise.

I've never relied on those heart rate charts. In my main gym there are three charts all of which have different "fat burning zones".

Keep it simple: Safe heart rate + calories burned = fat loss.

Thanks for this insightful information. I was actually thinking of doing a detox and have now changed my mind. My friends co-worker had a colonoscpy done and said by doing the cleansing for the procedure he lost 8 lbs. The first thing I thought of was the he needs to eat more fiber because it sounds like he is not going to the bathroom enough.

This one is for Russ ;) I thought I would share after the comment on the podcast about the oatmeal loaf would sound better if it was a "cake" lol...

This is a favourite around here...

Oatmeal breakfast cookies... and these are no measly little cookie but are BIG, Filling, they taste great and the kids love them!

Makes 3 servings

Ingredients
1 cup oats
1 cup skim milk powder
1 tbsp raisins
1 tbsp chocolate chips
1 cup apple sauce
1 tsp baking powder
3 tbsp whole wheat flour
2 tsp brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
Directions
Preheat oven to 350, Mix dry ingredients together (can be made in advance), Add applesauce and mix... adjust if too dry or too wet. Make 3 mounds (will be big and you can only fit 2 on a normal cookie sheet)and bake for 15-20 min until done...

they are about 350 cal per cookie,3.2 g fat, 4.2 g of Fiber, 19.2 protein

My favorite oatmeal is also the steel cut. As it takes up a bit of time to cook it, I, too, like to prepare a big batch at one time. I then portion it out into individual containers and store in the fridge. In the morning I take out one container, reheat with a splash of vanilla soymilk, then add a handful of frozen blueberries and a drizzle of honey. All I can say is "YUM!!!"

Another interesting thing about endomorphs is that once the muscle is built, it's hard to lose it, even with prolongued absence of training. Also, endomorphs have better cardio because of increased lungue capacity.

You guys are awesome. I missed you. You were gone just one week and I missed you. That is a sign that you are doing something terrific. I know this is a hobby and I can only imagine how much time you put into such a professional and polished product. So I just wanted to thank you.

Also an idea for a show -- weight training. It's value in a weight loss program and how to get the most of it. Here are my questions.
How much weight is the right amount?
Is it good to be sore after a workout?
When do you increase reps. When do you increase weight?
What else should I know to make weight training a part of getting healthy?

Here's a recipe for instant oatmeal packets, so you can control the sugar and salt.

Makes 8 packets

3 cups quick oats
salt
sugar (or sweetener)

8 zip sandwich bags

Process 1 cup of oats in a blender, 1/2 cup at a time, until it is as fine as flour.

In each sandwich bag measure 1/4 cup oats, 2 tablespoons oat flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 T sugar or equivalent sweetener

To prepare:
Mix a packet with 3/4 cup boiling water, stir, and let set 2 minutes.

Variations:
Apple Cinnamon: add 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and 2 tablespoons chopped dried apples to each packet.

Cinnamon Spice: ad 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and a scant 1/8 teaspoon of nutmeg to each packet

Raisin Brown Sugar: replace white sugar or sweetener with brown sugar or sweetener and add 1 tablespoon raisins to each packet.

Wheat germ: add 2 tablespoons wheat germ to each packet

I realize this podcast was from a while ago but I just started listening to your podcasts yesterday. I think you've got your facts mixed up about the alli pills. You mentioned a lot of negative comments about the pill but didn't really get a accurate picture. Yes, the important part of the plan is diet and exercise and so a person could lose weight without the pill. The pill basically helps a person lose at a slightly faster rate. They recommend 30% fat intake, not 20% (20% would actually be an unhealthy fat intake because of reduced absorption). Thus a person on a 1800 calorie diet who recieves 60 grams of fat in a day would reduce their calorie intake by an extra 135 calories every day. (oh, and it costs more like $1.50 every day, not $2 every pill) It doesn't sound like much, but it does add up. Alli has a VERY good website and a very great support system through the message boards. It has helped a lot of people lose weight - and encourages weight loss in a healthy way (lifestyle change, 1-2 pound loss per week). There ARE some people who stay on track because of the likelihood of having treatment affects, but I don't think that applies to everyone. In fact, treatment affects are really pretty rare. I have been on alli for about 5 months now, have lost 30 pounds, am currently at a BMI of 22 - and I've never had a treatment affect. I have gone over my fat grams quite a few meals and still, no treatment effects. I think if you got onto the website, you'd be surprised by the quality of information and support available to individuals on this plan.

I realize this podcast was from a while ago but I just started listening to your podcasts yesterday. I think you’ve got your facts mixed up about the alli pills. You mentioned a lot of negative comments about the pill but didn’t really get a accurate picture. (oh, and it costs more like $1.50 every day, not $2 every pill) It doesn’t sound like much, but it does add up. Alli has a VERY good website and a very great support system through the message boards.
The Support group is a supplement to the podcast and, like the podcast, contains a ton of good infomation. I hope they (Traineo) fix your problem. There is a lot to be learned from the people that post there. Good Luck.

Hey, guys! Wanted to thank you for mentioning the new Podrunner: Intervals podcast on the show, and to let you know that the reason we went with tones to indicate the change in BPM was because we have listeners around the world, and we felt it would be a bit chauvinistic to give instructions in English when clearly escalating and descending tones would do the job just as well.

Thanks again!

Sherry » Weren't they? I agree, the apples were not needed. I have to find a good pumpkin or banana bread recipe without a ton of sugar too. If you have a suggestion, send it to podcast@fat2fitradio.com.

April » I hear you April. With 4 boys, growing fast, already I can see what they're going to eat like when they're teenagers. My wallet is dreading that time. Buying good food for them will be very expensive, but definitely worth it. Check out the post I did on eating healthy on a budget (http://www.fat2fitradio.com/archives/35) or search for that on Google.

I feel that when I was in my late teens and early twenties I felt that my body type was a mesomorph but in my late twenties and two kids later I think I am a endomorph. Some of my family members are very thin and other are heavy. I am not big on pills I have worked out and diet that does work but right now there is no time. i have tried WW it is good but any diet which consist of healthy foods are more exspenive than fatty foods. It is an everyday struggle.

I'm not sure if this has ever been addressed, although I have listened to all the shows in their entirety, but one thing about the lifestyle change that I think is important to recognize is moderation. While we have talked about moderation, there are many of us that are almost food addicts, and certain foods will even trigger a binge. The problem with saying no entirely to these foods is, unless one chooses a 12 step group or the like to help support this choice, it is nearly impossible to stay away entirely from these foods. I almost feel like one HAS to have these in their diet, even once a day if the person is badly addicted or otherwise craving these foods. Everyone has their food that they just cannot live without and it seems so incredibly unrealistic to avoid these foods entirely, or even trying to add only one cheat a week. Particularly Americans, where these instant gratification foods are the norm, it is just an absolute necessity to add these foods to your diet. I'm not specifying foods because they are different for each person. I would suggest a person find the foods they absolutely love, mete out portions or measure the calories and budget them into their daily or weekly calorie intake. I think that is what will separate a lifestyle change from a diet.

Just my 2 cents. It would be really cool if you could air this!!

Thanks guys for your hard work!

The pumpkin waffles were awesome. I left out the apple and my guys still loved them. They couldn't believe I'd gotten them to eat a vegetable (other than potatoes) at breakfast. Thanks for including such a healthy and delicious recipe. Anything I can do to get these guys to eat healthier and keep it interesting is a great help.
