Support in Weight Loss

As I was going through my week, my wife did something that I considered sabotage. She was trying to be nice, so it’s hard to get completely mad at her, but it was still sabotage none the less. She enjoys the ice cream product Dibs. They’re these ice cream bon-bon type dessert. She likes to have a couple now and then, maybe two or three after dinner. I too enjoy the Dibs. They’re very tasty little morsels of decadence. However, there is a huge difference in the way we enjoy them. While she enjoys them two or three at a time, I enjoy them two or three HANDFULS at a time. I’ve asked her not to buy them, but she continues to do so. She says something to the effect of “Just only eat one or two”. Listen honey, if I could eat just one or two of something, I wouldn’t weigh as much as I do. And not only that, this time she bought some that I would like and she doesn’t. What part about that is helpful? NONE! It’s nice in a sabotage kind of way, but the opposite of helpful.

So this little nicety had me typing in a quick Google search that confirmed my suspicions. Having support while trying to lose weight is a popular subject. In fact it’s a 29,800,000 search result popular subject. It’s no wonder that groups like Weight Watchers have been so successful over the years. Their diet and exercise ideas are nothing new. They do have the “point” system, but really all that does is abstract the calorie counting. The real driving force behind the Weight Watchers success is the group. The weekly meeting where everyone weighs in and commiserates or congratulates each other on their weekly triumph or failure. If you don’t have support at home, then you seek it elsewhere, and that’s what’s given Weight Watchers their longevity. For me, it’s the podcast. For others, more recently a number of dieting web sites that have a social network attached are their support groups. These virtual support groups are giving dieters a very important ally (not alii) in weight loss.

Then there’s how to deal with those that aren’t supporters, the detractors. Now I don’t consider my wife a detractor, misguided, yes. However there are those people that don’t understand why you would want to lose weight. They like/love you the way you are. Ultimately it’s not how much they like you, it’s how much YOU like you. And face it, that’s the reason you’re trying to lose weight. You see something in the mirror when you step out of the shower that you’d rather not see. Believe me, I understand.

Here’s a short list of support groups online.

Online Support Groups:
Traineo
Sparkpeople
Weight Watchers
Yahoo Diet Groups
Google Diet Groups

I would also hope that you think of this podcast as a support group of sorts by sharing your experiences and thoughts by e-mail and comments on the blog. Jeff and I take each e-mail, question or comment very seriously and would genuinely like to help. So, please keep the comments and e-mails coming.

  2. Great show as always, guys =)

I’m very lucky in that I have tremendous support both at home and at work. My husband (God bless him) is naturally slim and can eat anything he wants and still stay healthy. He has a whopping 14% body fat . I joke that we are Jack Spratt and his wife. Even though he can eat all the fat he wants (it seems) he eats all the low fat, low cal food I make and actively looks for foods and recipes that I would enjoy. Every week when I weigh in he’s there to cheer or comfort me. When I gave him my fat pants because I couldn’t fit into them and told him to get rid of them he hid them in the closet. I just got them back this week and they fit again!!

I also get wonderful support from my co-workers. They put up with my nightly bulletins and cheer me on. They are all always there with new recipes and ideas to help me on my journey.

That being said, I would also like to say that I would love an online support forum like you described on your show. With my work hours it is sometimes hard for me to get with other people, like a support group, and while my family and friends support me, none of them are going through the same thing. Let me know where I can sign up!!

p.s. I stopped taking the Alli and am still losing, even with the holidays. Thanks for all the info!!

  4. Hey Jenny,

I’m confused, you gave your husband your “fat pants because you couldn’t fit into them”? And now you’re fitting into them again? Was that supposed to be “skinny pants”, because I have a few pairs of those I’m working towards. In fact, I’ll double my wardrobe when I do.

Thanks for the kinds words and for your input on the support forum. We’re looking into what type would work for everyone and not create a ton of extra work culling spam from the system.

  6. Does anyone use traineo? I’d love to hook up with some other f2f listeners on there so we can help motivate each other.

  8. Hey Kristin,

I’m on there, sporadically, under my old podcast name, http://fatguyradio.traineo.com. I haven’t updated goals and such in a while.

    Thanks,
    Russ

  10. I created a Traineo group for Fat 2 Fit Radio! Because it is free for everyone to use, I don’t have any trouble promoting it and I think that it will prove to be a great community for our listeners.

    The address is http://fat2fit.groups.traineo.com/.

We will start mentioning this on Podcast #11 and I personally look forward to being a Motivator for everyone in the group.
