Fat 2 Fit Show #6 - You Are What You Eat
This really was the food show. Last week we talked about the macronutrients of foods and this week we focused on what to actually eat. We found a great website that has a huge list of food choices grouped into 5 tiers. If you really want to know what to eat, choose your foods from the top three tiers. If you want to have the perfect diet, choose from the top two. We also talked about the absolute best and worst foods to eat and gave our list of our top 7 nutritional strategies.
We moved on to discussing a comment from our blog that asked about our opinions on the over-the-counter weight loss drug Alii and it’s side effects. We link to an article where 60 people have commented on their side effects. “Anal Leakage” was a common term that people brought up…
Russ’ news articles dealt with the Great American Smoke-Out and the five best foods to have in your diet. Jeff’s news stories dealt with a success story of a woman who lost 124 lbs in 17 months through diet, exercise and hard work, and a study that dealt with diet versus exercise for fat loss.

Thanks so much for answering my last post. I had been wondering if the fact that I was following a healthy diet and exercising was the real reason that I was losing weight and not the Alli pill. My husband told me that I didn’t have any of the “treatment effects” because I wasn’t ingesting enough fat. Thank goodness for that!! I’ve decided to give it a go without the pill and see what happens. I hadn’t thought of it as a behavior modification tool but since I did modify my behavior (out of fear!) maybe it did serve a purpose. Thank your wife for me Jeff =)
I also liked what you said about not completely depriving yourself of favorite foods. I allow myself to occasionally have chocolate of some sort because I know if I tell myself I can never have it I will fail in what I am trying to accomplish. I don’t keep it in the house but I do go out occasionally and indulge.
Thanks for your excellent show. I look forward to it every week.
Shrinking Jenny, who lost 3 inches off her waist so far!!
The five tiers of food link appears to be broken. I hope you can fix it - I’d like to tape it to my fridge too! Love your show!
Hi Amy,
It looks like the beachbody.com site is partially broken. A large portion of their site, particularly the forums, are dead. Hopefully it will be restored shortly.
Thanks for listening.
Russ
The link is fixed to the five tiers of food now. I changed the link to a different site.

I have a strange question that I would love for you to touch on in your next podcast…I’ve been on a diet called the Tony Fergusson Diet out of Australia, its basically low carb diet that puts you in a mild safe level of ketosis. Anyways… when I started the diet I was 220 and dropped down to 172 pounds, Ok here is where things go strange, after I got to this weight I started eating Almonds Whole Natural and Smoked Almonds, and ill admit I did eat plenty but I also never stopped eating right or exercising and within a few weeks I shot back up to 200 pounds:( I’d like to know if you think the weight increase came from a result of the Almonds, and Basicly are Almonds good to eat on a diet? PS people say that Almonds have the good fats Thank you
I realize this podcast was from a while ago but I just started listening to your podcasts yesterday. I think you’ve got your facts mixed up about the alli pills. You mentioned a lot of negative comments about the pill but didn’t really get a accurate picture. Yes, the important part of the plan is diet and exercise and so a person could lose weight without the pill. The pill basically helps a person lose at a slightly faster rate. They recommend 30% fat intake, not 20% (20% would actually be an unhealthy fat intake because of reduced absorption). Thus a person on a 1800 calorie diet who recieves 60 grams of fat in a day would reduce their calorie intake by an extra 135 calories every day. (oh, and it costs more like $1.50 every day, not $2 every pill) It doesn’t sound like much, but it does add up. Alli has a VERY good website and a very great support system through the message boards. It has helped a lot of people lose weight - and encourages weight loss in a healthy way (lifestyle change, 1-2 pound loss per week). There ARE some people who stay on track because of the likelihood of having treatment affects, but I don’t think that applies to everyone. In fact, treatment affects are really pretty rare. I have been on alli for about 5 months now, have lost 30 pounds, am currently at a BMI of 22 - and I’ve never had a treatment affect. I have gone over my fat grams quite a few meals and still, no treatment effects. I think if you got onto the website, you’d be surprised by the quality of information and support available to individuals on this plan.
