Fat 2 Fit #134 – Halloween All Year Round
TweetWritten on November 12, 2011 – 12:13 am | by Russ Turley
We’re back after an extended hiatus. Thanks for sticking around and staying subscribed.
First off, Jeff has a couple things to say to all the well wishers out there, and there were a lot of you. But, pretty quickly it is back to Fat 2 Fit business as usual.
In our email and comments section, Julia wrote in to tell us about her blog. It got us thinking that we need to spotlight all the listener websites and blogs. Why? Too often these types of personal weight loss websites don’t see a lot of love. Every one of you should head there right now and read and comment. We also field a question from Daniel that prompted the name of this episode.
For the Web Report, Jeff talks about a GroupOn in Calgary that promised “amazing results”. What results those are remains to be seen, but Jeff breaks down this BS product. Russ has a success story about a man that lost over 100 lbs. using Russ’ favorite kind of workout, the “at home” workout.

I’m glad that you guys are back!
Just wanna let you guys know that there really is a non-invasive fat busting procedure called “Liposonix”. It’s not FDA approved yet, but it is approved and used in Canada for several years. It uses sound wave to destroy under-skin fat cells permanently. Of course, there’s a catch. The procedure cost an average of $5000. Candidates must have at least 1″ of fat under the skin at the area of treatment. It takes 6-8 weeks to see results. The average result is only 1″-1.5″ reduction. The sound wave destroys the fat cells but the fat is still in the body, so one still has to work off those fat. There is also a long term problem. These fat cells will never grow back, so when one is to gain weight in the future, fat tends to accumulate around the heart increasing one’s chances of heart attack. The procedure is non-invasive but not painless, some even say it’s very painful. It is afterall destroying cells.
There is another similar procedure that is FDA approved, using cold to freeze off and destroy fat cells. It is not avaliable in Canada. I’m not familiar with the details. These procedures are done by licensed dermatologists or cosmetic surgeons under several weeks of consultations. It’s definitely not something you can get from a spa with your Groupon.
These are not for me, they are not worth the pain and money. But I’m glad that they are avaliable. Depending on the individual, the health risk might be worth taking if it bothers you so much that it affects your quality of life.

Yay!! So glad there are going to be new episodes again, and glad Jeff’s health is improving!
I have a question: With Russ having “stopped all cardio” in order to start gaining muscle and lower his body fat percentage, will his heart and cardiovascular system health be suffering?
Concerned,
Robyn

Hi Adora,
I hope we didn’t come across as in favor of the quack device that Jeff highlighted in the Web Report. We are completely against such products. They don’t lighten anything except your wallet.
Russ

I loved the show. Welcome back. I wanted to provide my blog to your list. It’s a place where I throw the world my thoughts and problems. Most of these revolve around weight loss and the issues that I am facing in my journey – but as of late it has been about family health issues. The impact that these issues are having on my health are playing a big part of my posts.

Hey guys! Just wanted to thank you for such a great and motivating podcast. I got married about a month and a half ago and in the two months prior to the wedding I gained about 10-15 lbs of stress weight. At 5’2″, that was enough to add 2 dress sizes to my frame and I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in my wedding dress! There were so many demands on my time for the wedding that I stopped running and started eating fast food for the first time in years. I don’t even like fast food, but it was so much easier than making a meal at home. On top of the weight gain, I started getting migraines again, and when I didn’t have a migraine I still had a headache. Well, the wedding has passed now and my stress is gone but I was left with that extra weight. You guys have been giving me the motivation to get back to my fit and healthy pre-marriage lifestyle. I’m back to running and I’ve slowly been swapping out all the processed food in our home for healthier stuff. I’ve got a few more lbs to go to fit in all my clothes again, but the real relief has been feeling healthy and not having headaches again. Thank you so much for your straightforward advice!

Hello guys,
Thanks for your show…love it! A little background…I’m 41 year old mother of two, work and go to school. Ten years ago I weighed 380 pounds, had a gastric bypass, went down to 185 lbs then back up to 225 down the line. I suffered from chronic headaches/migraines (everyday) since about the 3rd grade. At the time of the weight loss it seemed my migraines were worsening. The doctors put me on meds like anti-seizure or anti-depressants which as you know increase your appetite. Anyway, in August 2010, a therapist told me that there was something I was doing everyday that was giving me the headaches and migraines. I began thinking; What was I doing everyday since the 3rd grade that could be causing the migraines?” It was like a lightbulb went off in my head.
I decided that I would start making changes in what I was eating. I believe I was influenced by a colleague who was eating a lot of organic foods; so I jumped on the bandwagon. So long story short, I began eating as organic as possible, I stopped drinking soda and juice, did not eat any fried foods or simple carbs and it made the world of difference. I had the last migrain in January 2011 and I’ve lost 52 lbs to date. See, when I had the gastric bypass I had gotten desperate and had the surgery. I lost the weight because I was eating less but never learned how to eat healthier. If I knew then what I know now I would have never had the surgery. I now weigh 173lbs and I’m 5’6.5″ tall and I’m trying to go down to 160. Here’s my question: how many calories should a person who’s had this surgery should be eating? I’ve hit a plateau, have not budged in about 2 months. I exercise about an hour a day 5-6 times a week. I was eating about 1500 calories then thought maybe that’s too low and went up to 1700 still have not budged. According to your BMR calculator I should be eating about 2280 calories. I am concerned because I tried eating that much and went back up to 179. I do strength training, and lots of cardio, kickboxing, walking and running. Help!!!

Hey guys, just found your site. You’ve got a good podcast there – very positive. I will advise my friends about the issues regarding Vaser. Thanks for the advice. It does seem to be endorsed by a doctor. Goes to show that having a professional medical endorsement isn’t the be all and end all.
Oh yes, [at time of writing] I’ve got the Captain Kettlebell site working, assuming that it “is” at captainkettlebell.tv – a green and white site by Eric Walton
