Fat 2 Fit #121 – Running and Weight Loss Plateaus

Written on March 19, 2011 – 9:36 am | by Russ Turley

This week we had a bunch of running questions and running advice sent in.  Erin wrote in to tell her story.  She hit a weight loss plateau while running and went to see a nutritionist to find out why.  Ended up, surprise surprise, that she was under eating.  She shares some great advice about calories to consume when running.

We also got a great email from listener Pat.  Pat was running, going to spin class, swimming and weight training but still managed to GAIN 25 pounds.  Why?  She was eating too few calories.  She changed her ways and now eats more and works out less and has lost weight.  Find out what she did.

Since losing some weight Rob is cold all of the time and his weight loss has stopped.  Jeff has a couple suggestions for him.  And finally, Dina had the most horrible, excruciatingly bad advice from a person at a Weight Watchers meeting.  That person told her that for every 2 pounds of fat that she loses that it’s common to lose 1 pound of muscle!  Uh uh!

In our Web Report, Jeff shares the news that many listeners probably heard about already.  The spokesman for the Heart Attack Grill died.  Russ shares the new winner in the most obese state in the union and it’s not his!

Be sure to listen for the culmination of 3.5 years of Russ’ weigh ins.

Russ congratulations. You are an inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing your journey with me. I’ve only been listening for 8 weeks now. I listen while walking, you both keep me inspired, motivated and on track. I look forward to continuing to listen and being inspired to reach my goal of a healthy and fit life.

I loved the Tongue-in-cheek intro and build-up! The people around me gave me weird looks when I started laughing for no apparent reason during my walk today. Congrats!

How about posting a link to the scale that was mentioned?

Good point Keith. Here’s the link: http://powurl.com/scale

Thanks for the recipe idea! I didn’t see anyone mention this on the recipe website, but it worked out really well and adds some fiber – I soaked a cup of black beans the night before I made this and threw those in along with the chicken.

Russ!! Congratulations! I just listened to the podcast from the 19th. I HAVE been waiting for WHEN you would hit 100 lbs.

You give me inspiration! That’s about how much I have left to lose, after losing 40 lbs. I love the show and this really feels like a lifestyle that I can live with.

Take care and prepare yourself for the body fat conversation ;-) (You know it’s coming, lol)

The rule-of-thumb you mentioned: Adding 100 calories to your daily intake for every mile ran that day. Would the 100 calorie rule work for walking? One the weekend when I go on a 7 or 8 mile walk I can count on actually gaining weight for the next 3 or 4 days. It takes a full week for me to come back down to where I was before the long walk day.

In response to Keith: I had heard that the speed (walking vs. running) didn’t make a difference in caloric burn, and that for every mile traveled the person burns about 100 calories (depending on weight). However, I wear a heart rate monitor so I know the number of calories I have burned according to my exertion and I typically only burn between 50-75 calories per mile. If you are trying to lose weight, maybe you could try adding 50 calories extra per mile.

Congrats Russ… I’ve been listening to the podcast for a long while. I tell anyone who’s interested in losing weight to listen and get on the program. About 4 months ago I took up running to eliminate the last 20 pounds… lost 45 over three years ago and have kept it off. My question – as my body becomes more efficient at running, will I burn fewer calories? I’ve been using the 100 calories per mile, but the scale’s keeps fluctuating up and down around the same number.
