Fat 2 Fit #98 – Starting a Healthy Lifestyle

Written on June 10, 2010 – 4:58 pm | by Russ Turley

You’ve been living the lifestyle of a man or woman that is overweight obese or worse, morbidly obese. But you’re sick of it and want to change for the better. You want to live a healthy lifestyle from this day forward. How do you go about it? Join a gym? Start running or lifting weights? On the feature section of the show, Jeff goes over the basics of how to start living the healthy lifestyle that you will live for the rest of your life. For those just start your weight loss journey, this will be invaluable. For those already at your goal, it will be a great reminder or refresher course on lifestyle change.

In our email and comments portion of the show, Hilda, a self professed yo-yo dieter. She has turned a corner in her life and is getting healthier. She reminds us of the old John Travolta diet, eat half of what you order/make. We also answer a question about the “fitness” shoes made by multiple companies. They make you walk with a weird gate and supposedly strengthen your leg muscles. But if they’re so good, why don’t we hear of podiatrists extolling the virtues of these shoes? Lizzy also wrote in asking about the last meal of the day, that 6th meal/snack that you may or may not be consuming.

In the Web Report, Jeff has an article about the weight loss drug Orlistat, or Alli to you and me. The FDA has issued a warning that these drugs, as well as being utterly useless in weight loss, are now damaging livers. Russ has an article and video (link below) that mentions the Dirty Dozen, those vegetables and fruits that tend to soak up pesticides used in the growing process. These are the ones that you might choose the organic variety if your budget allows.

Avoid these shoes and all like them

Recipe of the Week:
No particular “recipe” again this week. Instead, another specific food product that you might find beneficial in your weight loss. This week, quinoa.  Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is up to 20% protein, typically around 16%.  Info on quinoa; Nutritional data; 5 Reasons to eat quinoa; quinoa review w/recipe.

Homework:
The homework this week is to do a one week lifestyle assessment for yourself similar to what I discussed in the show. Keep track for one week, how many hours per night that you sleep, what and when you are eating, how many hours per day are you working, traveling, watching TV, exercising, socializing etc. The goal after a week is to really look at what you do in your daily life. If you gave this to someone else anonymously, would they think they are looking at the lifestyle of someone who is fit or fat?

    great information again guys.

what are the types of resistance exercises you are referring to?, that Jeff was suggesting to his imaginary people next door

Most gyms have some sort of circuit of resistance machines set up. I was just referring to whatever was available. The basic groups of muscles to be worked would be chest, shoulders, back, bicep, triceps, quads, hamstrings and calves. One basic exercise for each would cover the whole body.

aw man, but those shoes are sooo comfy!
When I have to spend the day on my feet and I’m not required to wear dress shoes, I find those kinds of shoes leave me with the least foot and knee pain (I have really bad knees, so that’s a major plus).

I broke my foot last year and the Doctor recommend those shoes I agree they are not for weight loss but they are good for walking and for work. The Doctor is an orthopedic surgeon and a foot specialist.
