Fat 2 Fit #87 – Fat Enablers

In the days after the new year, Jeff was inspired by the shows “Half Ton Teen”, “Half Ton Mom”, and of course “Half Ton Dad” to talk about fat enablers. It’s all about the people who help you to be fat, and the people who you help to be fat as well. An enabler can’t make you eat if you don’t want to, but they can sure make it easier to do it. See if you fit into this category.
In our email section, Jason let’s us know about his fat blog called Jas and the Fatman. It’s a little different in that it’s an “athlete” page on Facebook. Jason has taken the fat blog to the next level. Bruce writes in and is concerned about his son’s weight. We did a quick summary of our previous show on childhood obesity to start, but anyone interested in this subject really should listen to show #23 for the full story. Finally, Talina writes in and asks about macro-nutrient percentages. We talk about that and give a little refresher on how to add calories to your diet successfully.
In our Web Report, Jeff’s article is about how 1/3 of woman are now cheating on their diets after less than a month into the new year. Shocking! Russ has news of infighting in the diet industry. Weight Watchers has sued Jenny Craig for what WW claims is a fictitious study that said that Jenny Craig was twice as successful as the leading plan. Oops!

I have a question what do you suggest to a young teenager who wont eat lunch and has many excuses but eats breakfast at 7am and his next meal is at 4pm He is starting to be body concious

I saw the shows you mentioned on TLC! I thought the same thing. I was yelling at the son to stop buying the cookies for his Mom! Another interesting thing I have noticed is husbands and wives. I’ve talked to women who have husbands who point out their weight issue (sometimes in not so subtle ways) and then either make it worse by giving them constant criticism about food, looks etc., or are the enablers who take them out to dinner and make them feel bad for going to the gym. What’s up with that?

You gave some great advice to the mother with the overweight son. However, you said that you needed to make a decision that the whole family would eat healthier because one member of the family was having trouble with their weight. I agree with the eating healthier part but I don’t agree with your reason. You’re not doing it just because one person needs to lose weight. That could lead to blame. You’re doing it because it’s healthier for everyone. Junk food is bad for thin people as well, even if it doesn’t show up on the scales.

I can see where you’re coming from Caitlin. The skinny son resents the overweight son because his days of nacho night are over. I think the reason is still valid, it’s just the other unintended problems that will arise. Collateral damage you might say. As a parent you get control over what they eat at home, so I wouldn’t explain a thing to skinny son. He just gets to start eating better. He may blame, but he’ll eat more healthy either way.
