Hi guys,

I just listened to your season finale podcast and was stunned when I heard my introductory post read out loud. I was also so ashamed of myself because I haven't been committed as I should be to my lifestyle changes. I have not gained weight but I also haven't lost any in quite awhile.

Some things happenned and I faced some major health issues (along with depression because of them) over the summer. I have been feeling a bit better lately but I still hadn't really committed to changing my ways until I listened to this podcast this morning. I now have renewed my committment to myself to get back on track and get myself healthy and strong.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've listened from the beginning and absolutely love your podcast. It's given me the motivation to try again and try harder.

Jenn

p.s. this isn't just lip service... I actually got on the treadmill today for 45 minutes and plan to add workouts IN PEN to my calendar =)

Love the podcast. I found it by accident but I have been struggling with my weight for quite sometime but seem to sabatage myself. I will continue to listen into the new season and try to use this site to help me keep on track. Thanks for your work.

Hello Saif,

You have a good question there. Technically, the most accurate method would be the one that uses the lean body mass as its basis. The differences in the other formulas for male and female actually have to do with the average differences in lean body mass. Women on average have less muscle mass and that is the true reason why they burn fewer calories during the day. (A pound of muscle burns the same amount of calories per day in men and women)

All of the formulas have some room for error in them though. The most glaring place is when you guess at how much activity you do over your Basal Metabolic rate. But even with the lean body mass one, you have to make sure that you have a very accurate and consistent method of tracking your weight and body fat percentage to get your lean body mass.

I would suggest that you take the average of the 3 methods and then adjust up or down slightly to reach your goals. If you are tracking your weight and calories carefully over time, you will be able to figure out your personal caloric needs much better than any formula. The formulas are really good to give you ballpark needs at the start.

Hi guys
this is Saif from Iraq, you are relay doing great work I become an addicted to your podcast.
I'm 100 kg, 177 cm 31 years old, 32% body fat and 68 kg lean mass. exercising for 3 to 4 times per week.
I was trying to calculate my BMR but found 3 methods to do that and get different results from these methods.

1945 Calories/day by using Mifflin-St Jeor
1753 Calories/day by using Katch-McArdle formula (Lean Mass)
2108 Calories/day by using Harris-Benedict

as you see the deference around 300 calories.
I notice that Katch-McArdle formula use the body lean but ignore the age and the other 2 use height, weight and age but with out take body lean.
who is the most accurate ? and what should my daily calorie intake be?

Many thanks for your great efforts.
