Fat 2 Fit Show #48 – Season 2 Finale: Listener Profiles

Written on November 13, 2008 – 6:16 pm | by Russ Turley

Back in December 2007, Jeff made a post asking listeners and members of the Fat 2 Fit Radio group on Traineo to  introduce themselves  to the group.  This show, the finale for Season 2, is the result.

Users of the Fat 2 Fit Radio Forum

Instead of a regular show, we spotlight members of the group.  There are some amazing stories that you have to hear.  They share their weight loss goals, their health problems and more importantly some share some inspirational weight loss success stories.  To give you a taste of what this episode is about, here’s the forum entry for Paula Russell:

Hi there,
I’m Paula and live in Brisbane on the east coast of Oz. This is my first post and this is my journey so far…

Photo of listener Paula RussellAbout 2 years ago, 270lbs, extremely depressed and getting pretty sick I was pushed by a friend to sort myself out. I took the brave decision to get a personal trainer and I have never looked back…well, occasionally!
Ive now lost nearly 70lbs but I’ve been stuck here on an extended plateau for quite a while now, hence I reaching out here for a bit of moral support.
Food is a constant battle for me.
I am an absolute gym junkie. Currently I go to boot camp 3 mornings a week, have PT twice, go to yoga and love to road run (I know it sounds extreme but I love it and it has completely changed my life). Once I am down to my goal health (I don’t say goal weight as I am more concerned with fitness and size).

I just don’t understand why, when I work so hard with exercise I just cant get a grip on my eating?! I know what to eat and how often etc. but its almost like I go off into a different world sometimes. I want to do this so badly…this is why I am here.

On a happier note, I absolutely love F2F radio and it is a true inspiration to me…thanks guys, never stop as the amount you are helping to change peoples lives is immeasurable. I’ve just bought myself a Garmin forerunner watch after hearing it mentioned on the podcast and am really excited about that.

Looking forward to being part of this community.

Isn’t that amazing?   My favorite part of Paula’s post is the part about “goal health”.  Everyone on the forums is in a similar place in their weight loss as you.  Some are starting, some have reached their goal, but it’s a safe place to share and ask questions no matter where your are on your weight loss journey.  Head on over to Fat2Fit Support.com and join today.  There are almost 300 members and the number of members and great information each member contributes keeps growing every day.

As this is the Season Finale, we’re going to be taking a couple weeks off to do some retooling of the show.  Look for some subtle changes in the next show and here on the website.

Don’t forget that you can subscribe to the show for free by e-mail or by RSS.  Check out the Subscribe page for more information or just check out the upper right-hand side of the web site.

    Hi guys
this is Saif from Iraq, you are relay doing great work I become an addicted to your podcast.
I’m 100 kg, 177 cm 31 years old, 32% body fat and 68 kg lean mass. exercising for 3 to 4 times per week.
I was trying to calculate my BMR but found 3 methods to do that and get different results from these methods.

    1945 Calories/day by using Mifflin-St Jeor
1753 Calories/day by using Katch-McArdle formula (Lean Mass)
    2108 Calories/day by using Harris-Benedict

as you see the deference around 300 calories.
I notice that Katch-McArdle formula use the body lean but ignore the age and the other 2 use height, weight and age but with out take body lean.
who is the most accurate ? and what should my daily calorie intake be?

Many thanks for your great efforts.

    Saif

    Hello Saif,

You have a good question there. Technically, the most accurate method would be the one that uses the lean body mass as its basis. The differences in the other formulas for male and female actually have to do with the average differences in lean body mass. Women on average have less muscle mass and that is the true reason why they burn fewer calories during the day. (A pound of muscle burns the same amount of calories per day in men and women)

All of the formulas have some room for error in them though. The most glaring place is when you guess at how much activity you do over your Basal Metabolic rate. But even with the lean body mass one, you have to make sure that you have a very accurate and consistent method of tracking your weight and body fat percentage to get your lean body mass.

I would suggest that you take the average of the 3 methods and then adjust up or down slightly to reach your goals. If you are tracking your weight and calories carefully over time, you will be able to figure out your personal caloric needs much better than any formula. The formulas are really good to give you ballpark needs at the start.

Love the podcast. I found it by accident but I have been struggling with my weight for quite sometime but seem to sabatage myself. I will continue to listen into the new season and try to use this site to help me keep on track. Thanks for your work.

    Hi guys,

I just listened to your season finale podcast and was stunned when I heard my introductory post read out loud. I was also so ashamed of myself because I haven’t been committed as I should be to my lifestyle changes. I have not gained weight but I also haven’t lost any in quite awhile.

Some things happenned and I faced some major health issues (along with depression because of them) over the summer. I have been feeling a bit better lately but I still hadn’t really committed to changing my ways until I listened to this podcast this morning. I now have renewed my committment to myself to get back on track and get myself healthy and strong.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve listened from the beginning and absolutely love your podcast. It’s given me the motivation to try again and try harder.

    Jenn

p.s. this isn’t just lip service… I actually got on the treadmill today for 45 minutes and plan to add workouts IN PEN to my calendar =)
