Fat 2 Fit Show #35 – Fast Food Diets

Written on July 10, 2008 – 9:18 am | by Russ Turley

Jared Fogle - Subway Diet SpokespersonRecently news of a man that lost 80 pounds eating only McDonald’s surfaced.  That statement is a little disingenuous and you’ll hear why on the show.  The man, Chris Coleson of Virginia, told his wife he was going to eat nothing but McDonald’s and lose weight. He did lose weight, but is that weight going to come back? What happens when Chris stops eating only McDonald’s?  And who hasn’t seen the picture of Jared Fogle, Subway spokesperson.  Jared lost a huge amount of weight eating just Subway.  We examine these two fast food diets in the Feature Section.

In the Web Report this week, Jeff has an article that talks about body images around the world.  Did you know that 90% of the people in Tonga are overweight or obese? Whew! In Russ’s news item, we congratulate Australia on winning the race to the being more obese than the United States.

In the e-mail and comments section of the show we take a look at an article sent in by Jillian and Chis sent in a voicemail.  The article is about high calorie drinks and their better alternatives.  Chris’ question is about how much water you should consume and how much protein you should consume.  Take a look at the links below for a great hydration calculator that goes through many questions and at the end tells you exactly how much water you should be consuming on a daily basis.  Hint: You’re probably not drinking enough.

I am surprised the guy that lost the weight by eating McDonalds lived to tell us about it. That was nothing more than extreme starvation. There is no way he can maintain that lifestyle. I’m amazed he didn’t suffer from malnutrition. If I ate that little I’d be dead in a week.

    As always – Great show!

Hey, guys… I just want to say great job as always! I have been listening to you all since the beginning and each time you guys only get better. Keep up the good job! Oh, and I have to admit at first, I was thinking Russ was losing weight way to slow… but I now am a firm believer that losing weight slowly as you change your life style is what matters the most. Thanks!

Hi guys! I’ve just started listening to your program and am really enjoying it. I like the conversational format and the down-to-earth advice and information you give. It’s also refreshing to hear Russ struggle at times with his weight loss goal (that sounds kind of weird to say…). But a lot of the messages we see/hear in magazines,on TV, radio and internet ads are “This (expensive) excersize equipment helped me lose 50 pounds in just 10 minutes only 3 times per week.” Or “By taking this pill I wasn’t hungry at all, the weight just melted off.” And of course the before and after photos that make it seem like weight loss is instantaneous and easy. Hearing Russ have to fight for every ounce sometimes… well… it’s just so much closer to my reality. Russ you’re my hero!

Keep up the great work guys!

@Susan: Believe me when I say I think I’m losing weight way too slow as well. But how many times have you heard about someone losing weight fast and then gaining it back within an equally short time? I think that speaks volumes about the ultra low calorie diets that most people put themselves on.

    Thanks for the comment.
