Fat 2 Fit Show #30 – Tips on Cycling

Written on May 9, 2008 – 12:34 am | by Russ Turley

Woman Biking to Work

With soaring gasoline prices, you may be looking for an alternative mode of transportation. Bicycling may just fit that bill.

Listener JC sent us his bicycling tips and we share that information with all of you. We cover safety, tires, gears, routes, maintenance and clothing/gear. We also add our own two cents on the topic.

In the comment section this week, Jeff answers an e-mail from listener Christine about working out and losing weight as we get older. She refers to Jeff’s article on Why You Get Fatter as You Get Older. Also a 78 year old that works out using the interval workout technique gives us a little background on where the technique started and how it impacted his fitness level.

Jeff’s news item talks about how the formation of fat cells at a young age could be working against you in your battle of the bulge. Russ talks about an article on a miracle device that measures not only your weight, but also your BMI, subcutaneous fat ratio, organ fat level, muscle level and believe it or not, your basal metabolic rate.

    Hi,

I just caught your show on cycling. I’m an avid pedal-bike commuter. I would rather ride in the pouring rain and sleet than take the bus. Cycling is a brilliant start to my day, an opportunity to appreciate the world around me…plus, it saves me money!

I get pretty sweaty on my way into work, and I’ve taken to freshening up with a towel bath. My current job has a shower but I don’t trust its cleanliness; besides, I’ve got the towel thing down pat. My last job was in a showerless office, and I’d ride in and sometimes also go out for a lunchtime run. I would wash my body with a small, soapy hand towel; my face with my girlie face wash; and use my deodorant. I never got any complaints, and was told on occasion that I smelled nice. Mostly, I received compliments on my glowing complexion.

I hope this helps. It’s a late comment.

Cheers, and keep up the good work with the podcast! I fall in and out of exercising and I find this to be a great resource.
